Green Party peer Jenny Jones was arrested at a protest in Parliament Square, said the Green Party.
Baroness Jones was then "de-arrested", although it remained unclear whether she was subject to a police summons, said a Green Party spokesman.
One of Baroness Jones's close friends was being questioned by police and she held his arm as he appeared to be in distress, said the spokesman.
Police said they would decide whether to prosecute a 64-year-old woman.
The protest by Occupy was being held in defence of civil liberties and the right to protest.
'Out of sight' Baroness Jones, who is also a London Assembly member, told BBC London 94.9 it was the first time she had been arrested despite years of protesting, "and I got a bit anxious".
Surrounded by police, with people shouting and her wrists being held, "I had a feeling just for a moment what it's like to be completely powerless", she said.
"All I'd been doing was supporting a friend," she said. "I was just there trying to support their civil liberties and their freedom of speech."
The Metropolitan Police said a 64-year-old woman was arrested in Parliament Square at about 11:00 BST "for obstructing police", and was then "de-arrested after giving details suitable for a summons".
The Met will decide "whether to proceed with a prosecution", the statement added.
Officers said they had arrested 15 other people sleeping on tarpaulin in Parliament Square after they failed to leave the area following requests from the police.
The Met said the group was prohibited from sleeping on the square under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act of 2011.
The group was taken to a central London police station.

Less freedom in Westminster's Parliament Square than in Hong Kong!! Donnachadh McCarthy 19th October 2014

Less freedom in Westminster's Parliament Square than in Hong Kong!!

Donnachadh McCarthy
19th October 2014

Donnachadh McCarthy went to Parliament Square yesterday to address a peaceful rally about the failings of British democracy. The intimidatory, violent and inflammatory police reaction only confirmed everything he had to say - as did the dignified restraint of the Occupy Democracy protestors.

Please go and support these brave protesters today or during the week if you can.
Yesterday I was invited to speak about 'The Prostitute State - How Britain's Democracy Has Been Bought' - at the Occupy Democracy Rally in Parliament Square.
The plan was to give the talk (which went well - despite being nervous) and meet up with a friend later for dinner.
Instead I ended up being threatened with arrest not once, not twice but six times and ended up sleeping rough in the open all night in Parliament Square with the amazing people seeking to establish the weeklong democracy Occupy Democracy forum !
The first near arrest was for holding on to a placard stating that "Occupy Democracy is a drug and alcohol free zone".
Three policemen nearly broke my fingers to take it off me, whilst refusing to tell me on what grounds a peaceful protester could not have such a placard.
The second near arrest was when about 60 of us were sitting around in a circle on the grass discussing democracy and occupy. About 40 riot police surrounded about 20 of us and kettled us in. They then threatened us with arrest for refusing as peaceful citizens to give our names.
The third near arrest happened when I helped rescue one of the peaceful democracy debaters from a snatch squad.
The fourth near arrest happened when I saw the private security guard boss who disgracefully now police Parliament Square (AOS) , indicate uglily three peaceful democracy debaters whom he wanted arrested and helped grab them out of the way.
The fifth near arrest was when I argued that the police were guilty of unnecessary harassment and making a farce of the Metropolitan Police, in seeking to wake up one of the democracy debaters who was asleep, as they claimed the plastic bag he was using to keep himself dry was "an object assisting him to sleep" and that this was illegal in Parliament Square!
The sixth and final near-arrest was this morning when the police sergeant and four policement dragged me away from Occupy Democracy for the heinous crime of holding a placard with their values:
"Peaceful non-violence
No discrimination of any sort
No drugs or alcohol on-site"

They eventually tore it off me, after I exercised peacecful direct action in seeking to hold on to it, whilst asking on what grounds it was illegal to have such a sign and the sergent tore it to shreds.
Hundreds of police - but whatever for?
There were literally hundreds and hundreds of police surrounding the democracy debate.
Then another police cordon around the squares footpaths - within which the press were banned.
Then the entire boundary of the square was surrounded by police vans.
A police helicopter hovered over-head. Hundreds more police were in vans spread all around the vecinity.
This massive over-policing and attempts to shut the democratic forum down was truly shocking and outrageous.
However, despite repeated provocation the democrats remained peaceful, and with huge help from the legal team, Occupy faced down all of the attacks and is now proceeding peacefully with talks and workshops all week, including today.
Please go and support these brave protesters today or during the week if you can.
I am now going to crash ... grateful for not being in jail and grateful for helping claim this space for open demoractic debate for nine days, outside the Whore of Parliaments.

Between 50 and 100 Occupy Democracy protesters remain after police arrest one and evict others after three days in square

Police made one arrest after hundreds of officers converged on Parliament Square in London on Sunday night in an attempt to remove Occupy Democracy protesters.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said that officers were enforcing a notice to desist. The demonstrators, who were in the third day of occupying the square, were given 30 minutes to leave or face arrest.
Possessing items that could be used for sleeping in Parliament Square was made illegal under the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011.
One protester used a smartphone to send a live video stream of the eviction to the Bambuser website as others condemned the police action on social media.
Officers could be seen dragging away some of the protesters after they refused to leave.
An Occupy spokeswoman described the police action as “absolutely crazy”.
She said offficers told them that they could not sit on tarpaulins, which were deemed to be “structures”.
Officers did not remove all of the protesters and between 50 and 100 remained in the square late on Sunday night.
The person who was arrested was being held in custody at Charing Cross police station.
Occupy London said on its Twitter feed: “David Cameron supported HK pro-democracy protests but is intent on crushing them in UK w[ith] violence.”
The group planned to remain in Parliament Square for another week. According to its website, the goal of the Occupy Democracy campaign is to “direct the energy from current single-issue struggles into a critical mass that can radically challenge the corrupt and unrepresentative system”.

The Act brought in new police powers against raves, squatters, protestors, travellers and others, and was passed amidst widespread opposition.

However when the police were challenged about the by laws they claimed to be enforcing.they could not find a reason for which the bye laws came into effect.after a few hours of legal wrangling.the chief inspector was left stuttering on the phone to Bindmans solicitors.saying there was actually no reason why the bye laws should be enforced.the police stood down dropped their cordon  and a direct democracy GA ensued.

Welfare Not Warfare: join the peace bloc on the TUC march 18 October

Cut WarStop the War will join the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and other peace campaigns on the 18th October as part of the peace bloc at the TUC's Britain Needs A Pay Rise march. The TUC national demonstration will call for a properly enforced minimum wage, higher wages from employers, a commitment to the living wage and a crackdown on excessive executive pay.

We will join the march to point out the hypocrisy of imposing increasingly harsh austerity measures on ordinary people whilst increasing money spent on new wars and bloodshed. We believe the government should spend the money on welfare not warfare. We will demand an end to the bombing campaign in Iraq, and protest against the British government intervening in Syria.

David Cameron wants to change the law so fracking companies can drill under our homes without permission.

But the plans can't go through without MPs votes, so if we can get them to see how unpopular Cameron's idea is, they'll think twice before voting it through when the time comes.

I've just told my MP to resist this change to the law, and vote against it when the time comes. Will you help me?

BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky: Include the Green Party in the TV Leaders' Debates ahead of the 2015 General Election.

Robyn Meadwell
London, United Kingdom
It has been announced that the leader of UKIP, Nigel Farage has been invited to join the leaders debates on national TV before next year's general election. However Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, has been excluded from these debates.
UKIP has just gained its first MP; the Greens have had an MP (Caroline Lucas) for 4 years.
The Green Party beat the Liberal Democrats in the 2014 European Elections and is polling neck-and-neck with them in General Election opinion polls. In May 2014 more than 1.2 million people voted Green - more than 150,000 more than voted Liberal Democrat.
Natalie Bennett has just as much a right to be on that panel as the men. Apparently it’s too “messy” to have too many candidates in a TV debate.
By excluding a party with a female leader, we are sending a clear message to the public — politics is still an old boys club.

WHAT OCCUPY DEMOCRACY IS ABOUT DEMAND REAL DEMOCRACY. OCCUPY PARLIAMENT SQUARE. this Fri Oct 17-26th

WHAT OCCUPY DEMOCRACY IS ABOUT

DEMAND REAL DEMOCRACY. OCCUPY PARLIAMENT SQUARE.
Our time is now.
In Hong Kong, hundreds of people are fighting courageously for the right to a real vote. They know that a system where candidates are decided by the state is no democracy.
In Scotland, 45% of people rejected Westminster rule. They know that a system that takes the power to make local decisions out of their hands is no democracy.
We know that democracy is not just about having a vote every four, now five years. It is about having the power to make your voice heard. We know that a government that answers to profit before people is no democracy.
In the UK today, record numbers of people are homeless, record numbers rely on food banks to feed their families, and record numbers face fuel poverty as energy prices rise eight times faster than wages.
At the same time, inequality is back on the rise, making us one of the most unequal countries in the developed world. The amount we ask businesses to contribute to our social services in tax is set to be the lowest of any of the G20 countries. Tax evasion and avoidance costs the UK £95bn a year, enough to fund the NHS in England.
Nobody voted to be made homeless, hungry or unemployed.  It is clear whose voices are being heard.
We need to start a movement for real democracy. The voices of the majority have been ignored for too long. We need to give ourselves the tools to hold our politicians to account, and to end the corporate lobbying power that drowns our voices out.
To do it, we need a movement that cannot be ignored. That is why we are occupying Parliament Square from the 17th – 26th of October, to begin a fight for a real democracy (see the original call to action). There, in the shadow of Nelson Mandela’s statue, we will transform the Square into a civic space where we can re-envision what our society could be like, with talks, workshops, community assemblies, music and theatre.
There is one thing that every successful social justice movement has had to overcome: the prevalence of the belief that the status quo is how it has to be. That there is no alternative. All of us can feel weakened and ground down by that belief, but all of us must have the courage to overcome it. To imagine a different future for ourselves. To show each other that there is an alternative. Because the current system relies entirely on our believing that there isn’t.
The austerity measures imposed on us for the sake of economic growth, our continued reliance on dirty coal and oil, our hospitals closing, our transit systems worsening while fares rise, our children attending under-funded schools with exhausted underpaid teachers – we only accept these things because we let ourselves believe there is no other way of doing things.
But please, join us for the Occupation. Try imagining there is another way. Do it with people you love, people you trust, with experts and activists and people to be inspired by. If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Your friends, family, colleagues are invited. Now is the time to produce our vision of a sane, workable, inspiring alternative, together. Come to learn, discuss and participate. Dare to believe that there is an alternative.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
Rise, like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many—they are few!

PROGRAMME

We are putting together a 9 day programme of speakers, workshops and assemblies. Each day will have a different theme.

Friday 17 Oct: Overnight Vigil for the Eradication of Poverty – why do billions still want for food, water and basic medicine?
The occupation starts at 5pm on Friday 17 October with an overnight vigil to mark the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Speakers at the vigil include: John Hillary (War on Want), Ruth London (Fuel Poverty Action), Keith Hebden (End Hunger Fast), Kofi Mawuli Klu (Pan-African Reparations Coalition in Europe). Plus “speakers corner” including Jamie Kelsey-Fry (New Internationalist).
This will be a candlelit event with speakers and acoustic entertainments where we will stand in solidarity with the victims of the widening wealth inequality that we see in the UK today as a result of our broken democracy. We will also stand in solidarity with the victims of our foreign policy which impoverishes and exploits many parts of the world through economic, diplomatic and military means. We invite members of faith and development groups as well as those of no faith to join us.
Bring a candle in a jam jar and, in case of rain, an umbrella (yellow if possible). As a gesture of solidarity with those suffering homelessness we feel we should not have shelters in the square that night.
Read more about the Friday opening event
Saturday 18 Oct: Why we need a revolution in democracy and what might that look like?

Sunday 19 Oct: Money, Tax & Finance – Why the 1% have even more Power & Money than before.
With speakers including Lucy Alright (UK Uncut), Ann Pettifor (New Economics Foundation), John Christensen (Tax Justice Network) and James Medway (New Economics Foundation). Plus: An assembly on the topic of “The 45% plus The 99% – how can we come together to challenge the Westminster elite?”
Monday 20 Oct: Public services 1: Privatisation and the corporate takeover – why they’re murdering the NHS, the welfare state and our public services. With Andy G. (Disabled People Against the Cuts), Dr Louise-Marie Irvine (Save Lewisham Hospital).
Tuesday 21 Oct: Public services 2: Privatisation and ‘trade deals’- how they’re trying to kill democracy before we realise what they’re up to – for good! Education, homes, trade deals.
Wednesday 22 Oct: Life, Environment & Equality – why a revolution in democracy is needed to safeguard our future.
With Speakers including Asad Rehman (Friends of the Earth), Jenny Jones (Green Party), Jeremy Leggett (Solar Century, Carbon Tracker), Jonathan Neale (One Million Climate Jobs) and Mothiur Rahman (Community Chartering Network).

Friday 24 Oct: War & Peace – War, what is is good for? Why we need to redefine our national interests and bring an end to resource wars. Featuring Mika Minio-Paluello (Platform) and Dilar Dirik (University of Cambridge).
Saturday 25 Oct: Solutions – what are the answers they don’t want you to know? What would real democracy look like? What would our ideal society look like? Featuring Sarah Allan (Constitutional Convention Campaign), Donnachadh McCarthy (21st Century Great Reform Act) and Josie Long (comedian).
Sunday 26 Oct: Means of change – a better world is nice in theory, but how do we make it happen? We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.
A day of assemblies to answer the question: “where do we go from here?”
