Squatters take over Soho offices to create a hub for London’s growing homeless | urban75 blog

Squatters have occupied a former office block in the heart of trendy Soho, and have said that they intend to turn it into a hub for the capital’s growing army of homeless people.

The activists said that by providing shelter for the homeless they wished to, “embarrass Westminster council and people in positions of power by doing the work they should be doing.”
Talking to the Standard, Jon, a member of Street Kitchen, added:
We want to offer a safe space policy to vulnerable and homeless people – no drugs, no violence, racism or sexism.
Our aim is to ensure no one has to sleep on the streets of London. There are thousands but to us one person is too many.

Phoenixs comment on article

"Mike Freer still punting out the LIE that you could squat someones home while on holiday or down the shops.Complete fear mongering. The Displaced Residential Occupier part of Criminal Law Act 1977 prevents someone from occupying someones home while on holiday or shopping.

http://content.met.police.uk/News/Advice-on-Squatters/1400006029682/1257246741786

"A Displaced Residential Occupier is where a residential owner is living in a dwelling and comes back (e.g. from shopping or a holiday) and finds squatters who won’t leave, then these individuals (the owners) are protected by the criminal law under section 7 Criminal Law Act.
If officers are satisfied that the home owner is a Displaced Residential Occupier then they can arrest the trespassers and no referral to civil courts for eviction is required."

The law he based on this LIE that was repeated by many mainstream media outlets, has led to untold misery and a housing crisis, spiralling out of control when there are 1.5 million empty buildings in the UK.

When MPs lie like this what recourse have the poorest in our society but to take creative and peaceful direct action, camping on his front yard, incidentally, invited by his constituency office workers to peacefully protest there.
All we asked was that the MP for the area these homeless people lived in ,would come out and talk to the people he was supposed to represent.Accounting for his misrepresentation of the issues, and undemocratic criminalisation of the most vulnerable in our society.
96% of the replies to the governments consultation on criminalisation of squatting, said DO NOT criminalise. This included:Judges and lawyers associations,Police, Housing and homeless associations and charities.Where has the Democracy gone, that is why many young people have given up on lying politicians who will say anything to get into power, then not fulfil their promises,no wonder many have turned to the direct action movement.
One day all will have a home, when some of the 1.5 million empty buildings are recycled.
Mike Freer does not dare to meet with homeless squatting groups for he knows he would be called out on his lies."

Women Against Fundamentalism

Women Against Fundamentalism

This timely book should inspire younger generations of activists to pick up the torch, to lead simultaneously anti-racist and anti-fundamentalist feminist politics. With the xenophobic far right rising and communalism turning beliefs and cultures into identity politics’ weapons, women’s rights, citizenship and secular traditions are at stake. The spirit of WAF, its rare political clarity, its true internationalism, are more than ever needed.
Marieme Helie Lucas, founder of Women Living Under Muslim Laws
The powerful analyses and reflections of diverse women in the UK fighting authoritarian religious movements are documented here in all their brilliance and honesty. This is a resource in the best sense: of the refusal to submit, the courage to challenge, the strength to reflect critically. In a turbulent and complex period global – religious atrocities, military invasions, and a brutal war against the dignity and personhood of women – this book shows us that we can and must face many ways at once if progressive global politics is to have a future.
Professor Chetan Bhatt, London School of Economics and Political Science
There is much to learn from, and much to celebrate, in these pages: a feminist, anti-racist politics which supports religious freedom and expression but which challenges fundamentalism in all its forms, combined with compelling testaments to the intermingling of the personal and the political in private and public life. As individual accounts and as the documentation of an important social movement, these inspiring political narratives provide insight into one of the most complex and persistent challenges of our time.

Who we are
Well Grounded is a group of activists who are passionate about sustaining activism from the inside out, encouraging a climate of looking after ourselves and each other so that we can keep on the fight for a better world.
We observe that activism is often physically and emotionally exhausting, involves going to boundaries and often beyond them, and can at times feel hopeless, uncomfortable and overwhelming. To be able to carry on doing what we do, we recognise the importance of taking care of our needs, stopping sometimes to rest, finding space for our feelings before they get on top of us, and staying connected with each other and ourselves.

What we do
*On-action support spaces for recovering & re-charging (quiet held spaces for listening, tea, resting, massage etc.)
*“Roaming” support at actions / demos
*Referrals for post-action trauma support (links with trained counsellors)
*Monthly drop-in space in London: support, networking, idea-gathering
*Facilitating post-action debriefing sessions
*Workshops on sustaining activism

Locals Protest Outside Housing Exhibition. - UK Indymedia
On Thursday April 16th 2015 many local people assembled outside Cambridge Corn Exchange in response to a property exhibition hosted there.

This might on the face of it seem incongruous until you learn that many of the new build properties in Cambridge are being snapped up by foreign investors... and left empty while the current London driven property bubble continues to hyper inflate prices.

This has led to a situation where, despite there being at least 2,500 people awaiting homes on local social housing lists, these same local people are being priced out of the market (either for renting or buying) by the artificially exaggerated prices we are currently witnessing, with Cambridge now being one of the most expensive places in the country outside of London to (attempt to) buy or rent a home.

This problem has been exacerbated by the post-Thatcherite Right To Buy scheme started in the 1980s, which has seen a significant depletion of Council housing stocks, which have not been replaced with enough new stock for a generation.

Support Phoenixs Projects and networking Use DONATE button on the blog.Crowd fund it innit Many actions this year need some funds #olsx @occupynn #housingaction

Hi folks if you like the work that Phoenix and the network have been doing over the last 20 years, then now is the time to support the cause.DONATE

(the donate button is top right hand side of the home page)

We have been running frontline squatted environmental community centres that have helped untold people.
Helping to house people, provide advise and support.

Taking direct action to help people and planet, support the environment and Mother Nature in many places where the earth is being ravaged and destroyed.

Networking people ideas, projects and solutions for a better future.
Weaving a web of peoples resistance to corporate slaughter of our planets resources.

Planting seeds of a better future through collective action, our network has helped to seed, support and  create numerous eco and social projects over the years.

This year there are many actions events and fronts that need support.

From community centre projects, to Eco villages, squats, homeless projects, solutions networking etc

This blog is read by many people across the Globe, averaging around 4-500 views a day.
It amazes me that it is read by large numbers in the USA,Russia,Ukraine,Germany,France,Spain,Italy,Ireland
and as far away as China,Korea,India and Brazil.

To keep the actions and events going costs, to pay phone bill, travel, buy equipment and tech.
Pay for petrol to actions and events etc etc

We would like to do more Live streaming from the front lines, unfortunately my data contract has been cut down so can no longer livestream the exciting adventures as they happen.

£15/month would pay for a sim that has unlimited data or a few hundred would mean i could buy back my old phone contract unlimited data.

Any amount would be appreciated and would go a long way, being used in sustainable way.

This year we have a MAJOR Campaign about CIVIL LIBERTIES and LAND RIGHTS at
www.runnymede.community an eco village of 3 years that is next to the Magna Carta memorial, so will stoke international debate on civil liberties in the media.

Also we plan a major push to network environmental and social SOLUTIONS through www.solutionszonetv.wordpress.com

PLEASE DONATE and drop me an email to say something about what you like about the blog and what you do.....keep networking viva the resistance for a better future for all.
One day we will all have homes.....

SQUASH release “Homes, Not Jails” report There have been at least 588 arrests, 200 prosecutions and 51 convictions April 2015 #olsx @occupynn #housingaction

The last two and a half years have been extremely hard for people squatting in England and Wales. Due to section 144 of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (s144 LASPOA), almost 600 young homeless people have been arrested by the police, and at least 200 prosecuted for the offence of sheltering themselves in empty and unused buildings.

In 2013, Squatters Action for Secure Homes (SQUASH) released “The Case Against Section 144”, a six month review of the effects of s144 LASPOA since it came into effect in 2012. The report found s144 LASPOA to be Unjust, Undemocratic, Unnecessary, and Unaffordable, and predicted that it would adversely affect the most vulnerable in society.  SQUASH has just released its latest report “Homes, Not Jails” (April 2015), a 28-month review of the effects of s144 LASPOA using freedom of information data and case studies. The report has found that for the period September 2012 to January 2015:

·         There have been at least 588 arrests, 200 prosecutions and 51 convictions under s144 LASPOA, with 75% of those arrests occurring in London.
·         Case studies and statistics show that the police use s144 LASPOA in an arbitrary manner, to summarily evict people suspected of squatting, without sufficient evidence.
·         Those prosecuted have been men and women, aged between 21 and 41. This is the exact demographic that is taking the brunt of Britain's current housing crisis in the form of PRS evictions, welfare cuts, and exclusion from affordable housing options.
·         Most evictions and arrests under s144 LASPOA occurred during the Winter months (October – March), endangering the lives and well-being of those thrown out into the freezing cold. The case of 35-year old homeless man, Daniel Gauntlett, who died in February 2013 from hypothermia, shows what can happen.
·         Throughout, there have been calls by politicians on the right and left, as well mainstream media outlets, to extend the criminalisation of squatting to commercial buildings, which threatens to create housing instability for many more young people.

The “Homes, Not Jails” report (6-pages) and the supporting evidence Appendix (55-pages) can be found by visiting the SQUASH website:

SQUASH are concerned that s144 LASPOA is criminalising the homeless, and detrimentally affecting the quality of life for many thousands of people. We are therefore calling for s144 LASPOA to be repealed, and an end to illegal and unlawful evictions. Squatting must return to being a civil matter, because the police and magistrates are not equipped to deal with questions of possession and property law.

Sincerely

Squatters Action for Secure Homes

Parents and toddlers occupy London nursery to fight redevelopment | Society | The Guardian

Parents, toddlers and housing protesters have occupied a north Londoncommunity nursery closed to make way for new homes in the latest example of grassroots opposition to council estate redevelopment.
The nursery – which was shut at the end of March, leaving 15 pre-school children with nowhere to go – has become the focal point for protests against Barnet council’s plans to demolish 400 council homes on the Dollis Valley estate, sell off the land for £11m and build a mix of private and social housing.
It is the latest in a series of protests against regeneration of council estates across London. The availability of affordable housing for those on low incomes has been a significant issue in the runup to the general election, especially in the capital, and several housing estate homes have been occupied by protesters.

OCCUPY DEMOCRACY’S DEMANDSGA_Demands

Occupy Democracy is a social movement for a democracy free from corporate control that works for people and planet.
At an open, day-long strategy meeting on 22nd February, we produced a list of six core demands for our movement to focus on. We chose demands that involved systemic changes intended to limit the control that corporations have over our democracy. These were chosen from the longer list of demands which were agreed by consensus at our occupations in Parliament Square.
Our six core demands are as follows:
  • reform of party funding so that members of parliament act in the interests of  those who elect them rather than the 1% who bankroll them
  • major democratic reform of the media to break the stranglehold of vested interests
  • a fundamental overhaul of lobbying and the way powerful economic interests inhabit the corridors of power within government
  • the introduction of proportional representation so that everyone’s vote counts
  • that MPs should not have conflicts of interests from either paid employment or corporate shareholdings
  • a citizen-led constitutional convention for real democracy.

Eco-warriors facing eviction at Runnymede call on landowners to put them up amid plans to spread similar communities across region - Home News - UK - The Independent

Eco-warriors facing eviction from their squatters camp at Runnymede in Surrey are calling on landowners with spare ground to put them up as they prepare to leave the woods and set up a string of similar communities across the region.
The community set up camp in disused woodland near Egham three years ago, a short distance from where King John sealed Magna Carta in 1215. It has since grown into an “eco-village” with about 30 long-term members and up to 20 visitors at any one time.
But the group, an offshoot of the Occupy London movement that set up camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral in 2011, looks likely to be disbanded following a court eviction battle due next month. The prospect of moving has given them the idea of setting up new communities.
“Why not have a chain of eco-villages around the M25?” said (Uncle) Vinny, Runnymede’s unofficial 48-year-old leader, who joined the community shortly after it was set up. Before that he had taught English to refugees on the Burmese/Thai border.

“We’re looking for other land – so if rich landowners are willing to donate to us we are all ears, even if we don’t end up getting evicted from here,” he added.
Vinny says that the community has looked after the land, taking overgrown and litter-strewn woodland and regenerating it. The community has taken in people lost in society, counselled teenagers angry at their parents, taught German to GCSE pupils and fed locals from their food supplies – which are grown, foraged and scavenged from supermarket bins.
“We can take what we’ve learnt and do it even better next time,” said 31-year-old Andrea Gomez, a Portugese guitar teacher who came to the UK 12 years ago to study music at Thames Valley University in London.
“If we could set up more of these communities it would take pressure off cities. It would reduce pollution, we could plant trees and re-introduce native species – using disused land could be part of the solution to overcrowding,” added Ms Gomez, who finished her house a week before receiving an eviction notice. Ms Gomez built her house from fallen trees, wooden pallets, scrap from skips and cob – a mixture of sand, clay and straw.

“It took me nine months but at least I got it done before the eviction and I’ve got some nice photos. But it’s never completely finished, I’m still constantly changing things,” she said. The landowner, property developer Orchid Runnymede, says the village needs to go because they are about to start building on an adjoining site. Sitting round a campfire, the group believe their kind of alternative lifestyle is becoming increasingly attractive in the wake of soaring living costs and austerity cuts.
“It’s amazing how far £20 can go here, but it wouldn’t go anywhere in the city,” said Joe, who has lived in the community for eight months.
“You see yourself develop. When I came here I was shy, but now I am more confident with people. I feel like part of a big family,” he added.
Sitting next to Joe is his friend Jedi. “I feel like a millionaire when I wake up in the morning. I’m in control of what I want to do, I can decide what I want to create. There are always structures to be built, whether it’s a music stage or toilets,” Jedi said.

“What prospects are there for young people in the system? It’s not new for young men to go into the woods to make a life if the system gets bad enough – it happened in the depression,” Jedi added.
Most members of the camp suspect that they would be unwelcome at celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta in Runnymede in June that will see the Queen and thousands of dignitaries gather by the River Thames just down the road.
“We’re too frontline – living the alternative lifestyle that is an embarrassment to the system – why would they want commoners when there are 7,000 dignitaries there?” said Vinny.
