The Met Police are being investigated for 'illegal hacking', as claims of a cover-up widen | The Canary

A whistleblower has alleged that the destruction of ‘spycops’ files by Metropolitan Police Service undercover units was far more extensive than admitted. Additional information about this has been sourced by The Canary. The whistleblower made the claims in a letter to Green party peer Jenny Jones.
The whistleblower also alleged that the Metropolitan Police Service organised the illegal hacking of communications of hundreds of political activists, some from Greenpeace. The alleged hacking included Guardian journalists and photojournalists.
Also listed in the letter were hacked passwords of environmental campaigners, four of whom were from Greenpeace. The whistleblower claimed that the hacking of communications by the Met was organised by contacts within the Indian Police.

A powerful show is explaining why a system that holds women back is bad for everyone | The Canary

A powerful show is explaining why a system that holds women back is bad for everyone | The Canary

‘Mansplaining Masculinity’ is a show by Dave Pickering. In it, Pickering attempts to explain that the patriarchal system in which we live isn’t just bad for women, it’s also bad for men. But unlike the recent crop of Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs), Pickering doesn’t position the problems affecting men as being the fault of women. Instead, he explains that we live in a system that tries to force people into set roles. Roles which only really benefit a slender minority of privileged men.
The Canary interviewed Dave to find out more. You should definitely try and listen to the show before reading the interview. And you can do so through Soundcloud below.

Hundreds detained as opposition activists hold protests in several Russian cities (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Around 500 people have been detained in central Moscow during an unsanctioned rally, with opposition figure Aleksey Navalny among them. More rallies, some unsanctioned and others permitted by local authorities, took place all across Russia.
Police detained around 500 people in the city center on Sunday, Moscow police said in a statement. The detentions were made “during an unsanctioned public event,” they said, adding that those detained have been delivered to local police stations for further administrative procedures.
For the Moscow demonstration, around 8,000 people took to the streets, according to police. As the rally continued, police used loudspeakers to call on the protesters to disperse.
Protesters came despite failing to receive permission from the mayor’s office to hold a rally at the site of their choosing. The authorities suggested two alternative locations for the event, but the organizers rejected them.

The idea of Britain opening an Imperial War Museum dates from 1917. An exhibition to mark the centenary takes the IWM in London a long way from tanks and battleships.
People Power: Fighting for Peace looks at how the British have protested against war. It covers everything from posters and poetry to street-demonstrations. But the show also asks if the era of mass protest is coming to a close.
